Forgetfulness was the Root of this Amazing App

uninteresting product story 5 - Intrepid Sourcing

Dropbox is a popular file hosting service offering cloud storage, file synchronization and personal online storage with more or less 500 million users all around the world. This online service has acquired numerous awards and accolades including Best Internet Application in Crunchie Awards 2010, MacWorld’s Software of the Year in 2009 and has consistently ranked as one of the most successful startups in the US and internationally.

A Bad Habit Caused the Invention

Despite all its brilliance as a web application, it is ironic this project was born out of a person’s bad habit. Dropbox founder Drew Houston thought of this project mainly because he keeps on forgetting his USB flash drive at home while attending college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Being forgetful motivated him to create a program which allowed him to store files he needed on a cloud-based format. Thus, Dropbox was born.

Dropbox was not an overnight success as it faced trademark disputes right after it launched in 2008. It was not until October of 2009 when the app finally had its current domain www.dropbox.com. Dropbox was co-founded by another person in Arash Ferdowsi. He learned about the project in one of Dropbox’s early demo videos produced by Drew Houston alone. Ferdowsi right away proposed a partnership with Houston and this partnership contributed to what Dropbox has become today.
